At the Gumfarm Hunt Club, we want nothing more than for you to have an unforgettable and safe hunting experience. Whether you are new to hunting and would like some safety information, or you’re a seasoned pro in need of a little refresher, please read on and familiarize yourself with the following firearms and hunting safety tips.

  • Whenever you see a gun, pick up a gun, or point a gun, always assume that it is loaded.
  • Ensure that your safety is always on and that the barrel of the gun is pointed down when you are walking with or transporting your gun.
  • Be sure you are certain of your target. This means make sure that you are shooting at an animal, and not a human. In addition, make sure that your target is not near any humans.
  • Wear the necessary amount of orange so that you do not become another hunter’s target.
  • Hunt with a buddy and do not bring small children with you when hunting. If you can’t hunt with a buddy, make sure someone knows where you are and what time you are expected back.
  • Make sure your gun is working properly and that it has been serviced before you begin a new hunting season.
  • If you’re using new equipment, make sure that you know how it works before you attempt to operate it.
  • Always store and transport ammunition and guns separately.
  • Don’t shoot at sound or movement.
  • Do not climb a tree or fence with a loaded gun. Have someone hand you your gun with the safety on when you have reached position.

Hunting for the first time can be a little intimidating. If you are new to firearms or hunting in general, it’s important to remember that you should always be prepared. The last thing you want is to forget a necessity, but you don’t want to hunt with unnecessary items either. At the Gumfarm Hunt Club, we are expert hunters and have compiled some information that we’ve deemed extremely helpful for first time hunters. For more information on hunting safety, please visit our “hunting safety tips”.

Clothing is extremely important when hunting, as most hunts take place early in the morning or later in the evening when it is most chilly. Bring a sweater, hunting jacket, heavy socks, gloves, a hat, and good boots. Wear brush pants or field chaps to keep you dry and free from debris. Know the regulations in regards to wearing blaze orange. Be prepared for all types of weather, and dress in layers so you can remove clothing if you become hot.

Know the habitat in which you will be hunting. Not all land is “created equal,” so find your sweet spot before you burn all your energy and ammunition. Always remember to follow the hunting dog and hunt with confidence and a strategy in mind. Try to stay quiet, don’t yell to your buddies or fellow hunters, and respect your fellow hunters.

Most importantly, use a shotgun that you are comfortable with. Anything from a .410 to a 12 gauge can be effective at killing a pheasant. Familiarize yourself with your gun beforehand and follow all hunting safety tips to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe hunt.

Nearly 2 million Americans partake in the enjoyable and exciting tradition of pheasant hunting every year. At Gumfarm Hunt Club, we want you to have the best experience possible and have provided some tips on equipment and gear to ensure you’re fully prepared and ready for the hunt!

  • Be sure to wear a blaze orange hat and hunting vest so that you will be visible at all times.
  • Wear a good pair of boots. While hunting pheasant, you will be traveling across varied terrain that will most likely cause some wear and tear on your feet. Investing in a good pair of boots while ensure that your feet stay warm, dry and comfortable.
  • Know the weather conditions in which you will be hunting in and be sure to dress accordingly. Dress in layers that can be added or removed, and stay away from clothing made from cotton as it retains moisture. Products made with polypropylene and fleece are good options as they wick moisture and retain heat.
  • Wear brush pants or field chaps as they will protect your legs and keep you dry when traveling through thick cover.
  • Use a shotgun that you feel comfortable with. Familiarize yourself with the different gauges and weights of each gun.
  • Know whether you’ll be hunting steel shot or lead shot.
